Cheap Eats!

Like a lot of Thai food, Thai Basil Chicken is inexpensive to make which makes it great for families on a budget. Singles can make it too, don’t get us wrong! Leftovers are good for lunch the next day and sometimes seem to taste better then too!

Chicken is an inexpensive meat when compared to others and we have used breast meat for this recipe. It’s possible to use thigh fillets too, they can be more forgiving while cooking, but breast fillets are cheaper and still delicious.

What Makes Thai Basil Chicken So Delicious?

Thats simple! For one, It’s the combination of aromatic herbs. The cooking method brings a special something to it too. The herbs are what you will smell as soon as you start to prepare the meal. It’s difficult to explain the effect that cutting up the basil and garlic has. But there’s something about the fresh aroma which sets the mood for something special in the kitchen. Once it hits the wok, all the Thai smells come alive and it immediately transports you to a Bangkok backstreet. It’s amazing how smells can do that for you. Of course, if you haven’t been there, it might have a different effect on you!, but we bet it’s still something special.

Only Simple Ingredients!

750g chicken breast, chopped
7 garlic cloves
6 Thai chillies
3 tbsp vegetable oil
3 tsp oyster sauce
2 tsp light soy sauce
2 tsp dark soy sauce
1 tsp sugar
1 cup Thai holy basil
4 rice paper wrappers
1 cup snow peas
Oil for frying

Cooking Instructions – only 5 Simple Steps!

  1. Using a mortar and pestle, grind together the garlic and chillies to release the flavours.
  2. In a small fry pan, place about ó cm of oil in the bottom of the pan. Heat on medium heat, then cook each rice paper wrapper, about 15 seconds each, set aside.
  3. Using a wok, heat 3 tbsp vegetable oil until hot, add the garlic and chilli mixture, cook for 20 seconds.
  4. Add in chicken and snow peas, stirring continuously for 4-5 minutes. Then add oyster sauce, light soy, sugar and dark soy, stirring for 30 seconds. 
  5. Finally, add the basil and stir until it has become wilted. Serve with crispy rice paper and extra chilli if desired.
